The Blackthorne Bargain

Chapter One — The Reading of the Will

The morning my grandfather died, I was closing a hostile acquisition in a glass room forty floors above the city, and I did not stop to take the call.

I want to be honest about that, because everything that follows depends on you understanding the man I was that winter. I saw the name on the screen — Maria Blackthorne, my grandfather’s nurse — and I silenced it, and I finished the deal, and I signed where the tabs told me to sign. Eleven minutes. The old man had waited ninety-one years to die; I decided he could wait eleven more minutes for me to win.

He could not, as it turned out. He was already gone when she’d dialed.

My name is Damien Blackthorne. I am told — by the newspapers, by the men who fear me, by the women who did not stay — that I am the coldest of a cold family, the purest expression in four generations of what this dynasty does to its sons. For most of my life I took that as the compliment it was intended to be.

This is the story of the winter that opinion stopped being true.
