In April 2017 a works programme names parcel 22 for interim hardstanding. In June a ground investigation finds markedly reduced bearing capacity. In July, on a specification that reads correctly across from a report that is entirely accurate, fourteen men pour nine inches of reinforced concrete over four hundred and thirty-four square feet of ground.

Every one of the four documents behind it is correct. Every person who signed one did their job properly. The ground was soft because something is in it, and the softness of it instructed a firm of consulting engineers to seal it.

Sabine finds out eleven days later, from a photograph. Then she closes four boxes and does not open one for fourteen months — the only recorded occasion of her stopping in twenty-nine years.
